Macmillan Cancer Support

MacmillanMacmillan is proud to be the official charity for the Larking Gowen City of Norwich Half Marathon 2010.

Cancer affects us all. There are two million people in the UK living with or beyond cancer and one in three of us face a cancer diagnosis at some point in our lives.

Macmillan’s aim is to reach and improve the lives of everyone affected by the disease. We aim to be there for patients and their families and carers at every stage of their cancer journey, helping to make life easier through our services.

This help comes in a variety of different forms:

Nurses and other specialist health and social care professionals - For many people affected by cancer, Macmillan nurses are a valued and trusted source of expert information, advice and support. There are over 3,000 Macmillan nurses across the UK, over 50 in Norfolk, working both in hospitals and in the community. We also fund occupational therapists, dieticians, GP advisors and many other cancer specialists.

Information services - Macmillan provides huge range of free information leaflets and other materials. We also have information and support centres across the country and mobile information centres that visit high streets, communities and events to bring free, confidential information and support to everyone.

Financial help and advice - Many people find a cancer diagnosis can bring money worries. Macmillan benefits advisers offer specialist advice to help ease these concerns, face-to-face or over the phone, helping people work out what financial help they are entitled to. We also provide Macmillan grants to cover a wide range of practical needs. This can include things such as heating bills, extra clothing, or a much needed break. Last year we provided over £80,000 of grants in Norfolk alone.

Phone service and website – We have cancer support specialists available to offer practical, medical emotional and financial support over the phone. Call free on 0808 808 00 00 Monday to Friday, 9am-8pm whatever the question. Our website www.macmillan.org.uk also offers a wide range of information, and our online community is always full of people ready to listen and offer support.

Help for cancer support groups - We offer a variety of training, grants and resources for people setting up or running local cancer support groups – for example Norwich based group, Keeping Abreast, has received over £5,000 of help from Macmillan for everything from leaflets to training to transport costs.

Cancer Care Centres – Our specially built treatments centres, such as those in Kings Lynn and Bury St Edmunds, provide expert cancer care in a healing environment shaped by patients’ needs.

Influencing policies and legislation – We do many activities to influence changes that provide long lasting benefits to thousands of people affected by cancer now and in the future - such as the removal of prescription charges for cancer patients.
